HSBC in the Community
The HSBC in the Community Middle East Foundation was established in 1996 to fund opportunities for youngsters across the region.
The Foundation, a £1 million charitable and community initiative, funds educational, environmental and other projects. The formation of the Foundation underlines the Bank's long association with the region and its continued commitment to the Middle East. An Advisory Committee made up of senior executives of HSBC Bank Middle East Limited is based in Dubai and all proposals for funding through the Foundation are considered by them before being passed to the Foundation’s Trustees for approval.
Since its creation, the Foundation has supported over 120 students from the Middle East to attend English language scholarships in the United Kingdom. The scholarships allow the students to attend 5 weeks of English language courses and experience a British way of life during the summer.
The Foundation has also supported other educational a nd environmental programmes. In Lebanon a series of teacher training programmes has been supported over the past 3 years which has benefitted hundreds of teachers around the country. In Qatar a programme of environmental awareness in all government schools has been sponsored. In the United Arab Emirates an Outdoor Leadership School has been established at Al Ain Men’s College with the help of the Foundation, and the Emirates Diving Association has carried out some important marine research and other activities with support from the Foundation.
In Jordan, the Foundation is supporting the SOS Village in Irbid for orphaned children, and a new village to be established in Lebanon will similarly be supported.
